The Playwright
If you're a fan of buffalo, beers, and brunch, this is the place to be. We're on Broadway in South Boston at a legendary spot called The Playwright. And after a major renovation, this place is back and better than ever. You have the high ceilings, the tile floors, the cool artwork, great lighting, so many TVs in every direction, and not just one big bar. They have two big full bars right here inside The Playwright.
So what's the food like at The Playwright? I gotta tell you, it's really, really good. Basically, this is pub grub that has been elevated. Chef Colton is one of the hottest young chefs in the city of Boston, and this guy knows how to take comfort food to the next level. From the very beginning, buffalo chicken was always very popular at The Playwright. So on their latest menu, there is Buffalo everywhere.
So let's get a taste of some of the most popular buffalo based dishes. Starting out with the Buffalo Chicken Rangoons. It's a mix of slow cooked chicken thighs, buffalo sauce and cream cheese that all gets wrapped up into that traditional Chinese style Rangoon shell. So you end up with these little triangles, these beautiful pyramids of deliciousness. All you got to do is dip it in a little bit of house made blue cheese. I'm telling you right now. This is one of the most addictive appetizers in Southie.
Sliders are another popular appetizer choice here, and these are buffalo chicken biscuit sliders. Yes, that's right, they make their own buttermilk biscuits every single day. They're super buttery, super fluffy and a great vessel to hold some of that spicy buffalo chicken. Really tasting the spice on this thing. And I think that buttery biscuit is what's bringing everything together. Kind of soaks up all that sauce.
Now, check this one out. This is the Buffalo Crunch Wrap. Sort of reminds me of a crunch wrap supreme from Taco Bell, but just taken to a whole different level of deliciousness. So you got a nice, fresh, hot tortilla on there, some smashed avocado, some shredded lettuce and a blend of three cheeses. Every bite of super crunchy on the outside, super cheesy and gooey on the inside… and the flavor really pops with a little bit of honey added to that buffalo sauce, that makes all the difference. That is my kind of crunch wrap.
I think this might be the biggest and best buffalo based dish here: the macaroni and cheese. They make their cheese sauce in house, and it's made with a blend of four different cheeses. Little bit of bread crumbs go on top for a little bit of crunch and some seasoning. And then it's shocking, I know, but they throw some buffalo chicken right on top… and not just some buffalo chicken, I mean, like piles of the stuff. I should write a play about this dish.
This is a dish that I was a bit surprised to find on this menu, but I'm happy it's here. It's the steak frites. This starts with a nice, plump, eight ounce flank steak that is marinated overnight in a combination of soy and garlic. So it's super tender. The key to this dish is actually the French fries, or technically, they're called farm fries. They come from a small Potato company out of Washburn Maine, and they're like a combination between a steak fry and a shoestring fry. I'm a steak frites freak, and I am freaky for this.
Now, if you know anything about the South Boston dining scene, you know that brunch is a big deal around here. The brunch menu is bold and delicious and creative, and you're gonna want to try some of this stuff. The number one brunch dish I would recommend is the cinnamon roll monkey bread. It's baked so it's hot and gooey, and then it's served with some cream cheese icing over the top. Give me some cinnamon roll monkey bread, a cold Bloody Mary, and put some football on the TV. And my Sunday is set.
Now let's talk about desserts. All the desserts at The Playwright are made right here in house. The number one selling dessert is the toasted s'mores cup. So essentially this is a marshmallow mousse that's on top of a graham cracker crust and then the whole thing is enrobed in some dark chocolate ganache. It is as light as a feather, but it has all the flavors of a campfire smore This is a beautifully composed and impossibly addictive dessert.
But if you ask the staff around here for their favorite dessert, they'll tell you it's the Vermont maple bread pudding. It is drenched in some homemade bourbon pecan caramel sauce. Look how it just drips down the side. You can see how sticky and nutty it is. This is the ultimate fall and winter dessert. But frankly, I don't care. I'll eat it all year round. That's insanely good.
So you can come here for dessert or for dinner or for brunch or just for a great Espresso Martini, but you will one hundred percent end up with a meal that you'll want to write about at The Playwright.
