Palenque
When Phantom sits down to fresh, free chips and salsa, a smile comes to his face. And when Phantom's meal was served at Palenque in Somerville, his smile became even broader.
Atmosphere(8)
Small, colorful, and a little funky. Eye-catching celestial painting on the ceiling. But, a little bit cramped.
Menu(8.5)
Authentic Mexican ranging from traditional favorites like tacos and tamales to interesting choices like giant shrimp sauteed in a Veracruz salsa.
Portions(7.5)
Everybody at Phantom's table finished or almost finished his entree, even after eating more chips than a room full of guys at a Superbowl party.
Appetizers(8)
Outstanding homemade chips and salsa. Yummy pork tenderloin tips in chipolte sauce. But the chicken and pozole soups lacked a little flavor.
Food and Drink(8.5)
Authentic Mexican beef fajitas-not like you'll find at a T.G.I. Friday's. Shark with cilantro special was as good a piece of fish you can find. Enchiladas verdes with chicken was packed with cheese and absolutely delicious. Satisfactory beans and rice.
Desserts(8)
A smooth crème caramel, but that's about it.
Service(8.5)
Even with only one waiter working the floor, the service was quite prompt. The waiter was happy to answer all of Phantom's questions about the menu.
Cleanliness(8.5)
Considering the amount of nacho chips and salsa that is served here, the dining room is kept remarkably clean.
Parking(7)
Beacon Street in Somerville. On street parking can be tough to find.
Value(7)
Appetizers from $3 to $5. Entrees range from $10 to $15. This is quality food, but the Phantom could have used a slightly larger portions.
