Mr. H
Situated among the sleek high rises of Boston's Seaport neighborhood is a restaurant that serves authentic Chinese and Taiwanese dishes in an ultra cool, sexy, sophisticated atmosphere. So let me introduce you to Mr. H.
Mr. H is all about style and flavor, from handmade dumplings and noodles to unique craft cocktails, all served in a meticulously curated environment.
Chief Culinary Officer, Thomas Berry says everything about Mr. H, from the menu to the decor, was intentional.
“When you walk into Mr. H, the first thing you see is the level of design that went into making this a special, intimate, Chinese inspired restaurant.”
“The food here is inspired by Chinese and Taiwanese cuisines. I put a lot of effort into researching. We took a trip to Taiwan to eat around and try to get as much information as we could building this menu. I think one of the things that was important to me is using very high quality ingredients, and we're sourcing not only ingredients locally and here in the States, but also sourcing very unique, interesting ingredients that come direct from China…I'm proud of the ingredients that we use here, and I think it really shines through in the food.”
And what better way to start an authentic Chinese meal than with handmade dumplings. They craft them by hand, everyday, and for the true taste test, you have to go with the classic pork dumplings.
“All of our dumplings and Mr. H are made in house from scratch. We make our own dough, we make our wrappers, and we make the fillings fresh every day.”
“When you take a bite of the pork dumpling… the first thing you'll notice is how clean and balanced the flavors are. We use super high quality pork. We grind it in house every day and mix it with just pristine Chinese ingredients. And I think it comes through when you when you taste this, it's a flavor bomb… it's got a little bit of spice, a little bit of heat, a little bit of garlic, a little bit of tinge. And you know what? They're juicy. It's going to be the juiciest dumpling you've ever had”
Their menu also takes inspiration from Japanese cuisine with their Shrimp Shumai. They're open faced dumplings, featuring rock shrimp, a vibrant lemon, ginger, butter sauce, topped with caviar, gold leaf and just a hint of wasabi.
For some finger food, they serve their own spin on the takeout classics you love.
Their scallion pancakes use tons of fresh scallions and butter so they’re light, flaky and totally delicious.
The chicken fingers here are a take on the traditional New England Chinese takeout style: big, plump, and crispy… served of course with a side of hot mustard and their housemade duck sauce, which is so good you might want to drink it like a scorpion bowl.
If you’re looking for a lighter start to the meal, they have spicy cucumbers that are brined in house in a salty, garlicky, sichuan pepper marinade and tossed with aged black vinegar and chili oil.
For something out of the ordinary, try the Tangerine Tuna. They take thinly sliced, high quality tuna, drizzled with a mandarin vinaigrette, spicy mayo, peanuts and basil, topped with mandarin slices. So It’s cool, refreshing, light, and delicious.
Their larger dishes pack some show stopping flavor and presentations as well.
The Siu Mei Steak is a char grilled prime flat iron in a ginger scallion sauce, with pickles and lotus chips. It’s juicy, and it’s got a little kick from the sauce.
And check out the Cantonese style Fried Chicken. It’s a whole chicken, that’s wok fried so the skin gets super crispy, served with some veggies and noodles for a balanced bite.
But, for Chef Thomas’ favorite, you have to get the Lobster Chung Fun.
“Chung fung is a rice roll noodle. And basically we make a batter with tapioca and rice and some other starches. We steam it to order… and then roll it up into these beautiful, velvety noodles…. we serve it with an entire one and a half pound lobster that's been bathed in chili oil, butter and truffle soy vinaigrette.”
“Think of it as a Chinese inspired lobster roll, really… it's the rice roll, noodle, there's butter, there's truffle, there's chili oil. I mean, it just hits on, on all the notes.”
“We basically took every luxury ingredient that we could and put it into one noodle dish, and I think it comes out outstanding.”
And dessert here is a truly transcendent experience, because Mr. H has the ultimate in edible art with their Chocolate Buddha.
“It's an oolong tea chocolate mousse, dark chocolate mousse, served with sesame, black sesame cookies and cream, ice cream, and little mochiko brownie bites and a little hibiscus sauce with some fruit. Fruit, and it's balanced, it's beautiful, and it looks beautiful. I think everyone is always just blown away when this beautiful presentation shows up.”
“I think you can tell a lot about someone whether they eat the head first or the belly.”
“Mr. H is just an awesome place to go. It's a great balance of Chinese inspired food, service, cocktails, wine, I think everything's been curated by our team of professionals. And it's just, it's, it's great for date night. It's great to just hang out. It's just a really fun restaurant.“
