Mex
An enormous Taco Platter fit for a king. Hot Queso Dip that puts the fun in fundido. And colorful Cocktails mixed up with the freshest ingredients. To take your taco experience to the Max, you need to visit Mex. Located in the heart of Kendall Square Cambridge, Mex is way more than your typical taqueria.
Delio Susi – Chef/Owner, Mex: “Mex is a fun filled, three level, Mexican restaurant with everything you need to have fun.”
That’s chef Delio Susi, who also owns outstanding Italian restaurants Sulmona and Amelia’s right down the street. But here at his newest spot, Mexican is on the menu, and it’s a cuisine he’s always had a hunger for.
Delio Susi – Chef/Owner, Mex: “I’m an Italian chef to begin with, but I feel like I’ve been cooking this food forever because I’ve made it for staff meal for so long. And I’ve always wanted to, do the Mexican food for myself as a chef.”
So he created a menu filled with both traditional and creative Mexican dishes, and designed the beautiful three-hundred seat restaurant with three floors of delicious fun.
Delio Susi – Chef/Owner, Mex: “We have the terrace outside, which is open to the street, a lot of city scenes. And then when you walk right inside, you have more like the open bar space with the banquettes. And then when you come up to the second level, there’s a mezzanine. Which is like more lounge and sit back. There’s a family table that overlooks the whole restaurant. And then there’s the roof deck, which is an interior, little mini bar with an arcade with a whole open outside space, and firepit, and twinkle lighting, and it just has this vibe. Daytime or nighttime. Just being in this building makes you happy.”
When you come for a meal at Mex, tacos are a must order. There’s the Al Pastor with roasted pork, charred pineapple salsa, and queso fresco, Carnitas with Mexican cola braised pork, tomatillo salsa, and pickled red cabbage, and the Baja Taco with golden battered gulf shrimp, pickled slaw, fresh avocado, and mango salsa.
Delio Susi – Chef/Owner, Mex: “So you got sweetness, saltiness, crispiness. Then you have the nice salad that’s spicy on top, and the mango just makes it all better.”
If you’re looking to eat something a little interactive, check out the Birra Tacos.
Delio Susi – Chef/Owner, Mex: “These are traditional style Birria tacos. Dipped in Achiote oil, set on a plancha, short ribs inside, Oaxacain cheese, flipped over until they melted and crispy on both sides. Topped with a little pico de gallo, queso fresco, and served with a beef consomme dipping sauce. They are to die for. Just think about it as the ultimate French dip. You take the taco, you dip it, scoop it, and eat it.”
With so many great tacos coming out of the kitchen, it might be tough to decide which to order, so Mex offers a Taco Party platter, filled with a chef’s selection of ten assorted tacos.
Delio Susi – Chef/Owner, Mex: “Comes on a flat long board. It’s some of our favorite tacos. It’s a big party on a plate, you know. It doesn’t let you down. It’s huge. It’s colorful, it’s beautiful. And it feeds an army.”
When it comes to appetizers at Mex, the Nachos Grande is always a favorite, and so are the Empanadas stuffed with Short Rib and Potato, the gooey Hot Queso Dip studded with spicy chorizo, and the addictively delicious Agave Wings.
Delio Susi – Chef/Owner, Mex: “Smoked first, and then fried, and then tossed in an agave hot sauce, sprinkled with queso fresco, sprinkled with scallions, and with a chipotle dipping sauce. These wings are like outstanding. They’re unbelievable. Must try.”
If you’re in the mood for seafood, there’s an outstanding Shrimp Ceviche, aa traditional Paella, and a not so traditional Sushi Taco.
Delio Susi – Chef/Owner, Mex: “It’s a nori shell that we tempura. You can get a spicy tuna and a spicy salmon. We have the highest grade sushi rice that we can buy. And it comes with a seaweed salad, pickled ginger, and wasabi.”
When it comes to drinks, Mex offers dozens of tequilas, which make for some magnificent Margaritas.
Delio Susi – Chef/Owner, Mex: “It’s a margarita like you’ve never had before. It’s as fresh as can be. We squeeze all the lime juice, all the lemon juice, we do everything fresh.”
And if you’d like a brain freeze along with your beverage, try the Mangonada Slushie.
Delio Susi – Chef/Owner, Mex: “It’s made with fresh mango juice, house tequila, Chamoy sauce, Chamoy straw, which is interesting, and it comes right out of our slushie machine. It’s insane.”
And from the drinks, to the food, to the space itself, everything at Mex is made to make you happy.
Delio Susi – Chef/Owner, Mex: “You’re in this colorful space, you’re in this beautiful space. Food has to be vibrant, drinks have to be vibrant. You come here for fun. This is the place to be happy in.”
