Green Forrest Inn
Phantom had heard good things about Green Forrest Inn in Derry, New Hampshire, but he was sorely disappointed. And from what he heard from neighboring tables, so were some other diners.
Atmosphere(7)
The potential charm is there. They make an attempt at creating a country inn atmosphere. But please ditch the vinyl tablecloths.
Menu(7)
Many options for beef and seafood lovers, but the menu could stand to lighten up a tad. They should at least offer a few dishes for those not seduced by rich cream and butter sauces.
Portions(9)
Portions were gigantic, certainly plenty to eat.
Appetizers(7)
Garlic chicken soup was properly seasoned and featured hearty chunks of white meat chicken. But the grilled portabella served in a balsamic demiglaze with- inexplicably-- toasts and cheese cubes was overwhelmed by the sauce.
Food and Drink(6)
The blackened scallops that could have sung in spicy perfection just tasted of burnt Old Bay seasoning. The swordfish saute with artichokes and roasted peppers on angel hair came in a swamp of sauce that tasted like Italian dressing.
Desserts(6)
How about a little apple cobbler with your ice cream? Slice of chocolate cake smelled funky and tasted more like a refrigerator than then "rich chocolate" that was promised.
Service(5)
If the service exhibited even the faintest hint of care and good humor, the food might have tasted better. But Phantom sat around between courses staring at congealing food and praying for bread to come. Server was either overworked, or just didn't care.
Cleanliness(8)
All looked in good order and restrooms were passably tidy.
Parking(7)
Located off 93 North, exit 5 in Derry. Plenty of parking.
Value(6)
Maybe Phantom ordered the wrong stuff. Maybe it was a bad night. But at seventeen dollars for an entree, Phantom can't recommend dinner as a good value.
