Chengdu
There seems to be a new "in" Chinese restaurant on the scene every few months in the Hartford area; the crowds come, rave, and move on to the next new place. Well, at Chengdu the crowds came, loved the food, and stayed.
Atmosphere(8)
Choose a table or comfortable booth in this subtly decorated but pretty dining room. Booths are raised and form a ring around the other tables.
Menu(9)
Everything you'd expect on a Chinese menu and more. Great chef's specialties, like crispy shrimp and walnut. Must try the chow fun (rice noodle dish). Lamb royal off the beaten path but worth a look.
Portions(8)
Right on the money, maybe a large spoonful more than the average serving.
Appetizers(8)
Regular Chinese fare, but all well done. Steamed vegetable dumplings are gobbled up by the biggest meat eater at the table. Huge portions of perfect boneless spare ribs. Cold sesame noodles also holds its own.
Food and Drink(9)
Regular menu is just fine but by all means dip into the chef's specialties. Fire cracker beef has long been a favorite, always delicious. Level of spice in food has been different on different trips. Chengdu reunion is a happy reunion indeed.
Desserts(6)
A few token choices. Fill up on the entrees and grab a late night snack elsewhere. If you insist, sesame banana is an interesting concoction. Fruit is fresh, or so Phantom hears.
Service(10)
Really can't get much better. Very professional. If your water glass remains empty for more than two minutes, meal in on Phantom (providing you can find him). Expect a visit from the owner himself to inquire about the meal.
Cleanliness(8)
Silverware sparkles. Nicely folded napkins and fresh table cloths make Phantom warm inside. Bathrooms fine.
Parking(9)
Short 5 to 10 minutes from Downtown Hartford, conveniently situated in West Hartford center. Plenty of free spots in the rare.
Value(8)
Dishes run $8 to $11; specials $9 to $15. $8 house special chow fun is a steal.
