Boston Beer Garden
Saint Patrick's Day and Beer go hand-in-hand, so the Phantom is starting his day at the Boston Beer Garden.
Atmosphere(7)
Huge TV screens allow you to follow the latest soccer and rugby matches. The old-style bar makes you feel like you've been here 1000 times.
Menu(8)
A good variety of soups, salads, burgers, pizza, and pasta. The "Hearty fare" section highlights the menu.
Portions(8)
The Phantom was satisfied, even with his four-beer induced hunger. All sandwiches are served with a large side of hand cut fries. Some of the entrees are a bit small for Phantom's taste.
Appetizers(8)
Very solid, from the daily soups to the sweet and sour wings. Rib appetizer is as messy as it is good. Huge plate of nachos stacked with all that good stuff.
Food and Drink(8)
You can consider this the Four Seasons of pub food. Lots of great homemade dishes with fresh ingredients, including Shepherd's Pie and meatloaf. About thirty beers on tap served ice cold. Above average chicken and pasta dishes.
Desserts(8)
Five selections range from a generic brownie sundae to a wonderful Bailey Irish Crème Cake.
Service(8)
A "6" at the dining room. But a "10" at the bar. Waitresses are all attractive and friendly, with a tough Durgin Park edge.
Cleanliness(7)
Very good for a brew pub, only average for a restaurant.
Parking(6)
Heart of South Boston, difficult to find parking (unless you risk being towed at the drug store next door.) For fans of "Good Will Hunting," this is right at the cross of "L" Street.
Value(8)
Appetizers average $5. Sandwiches run about $6. Entrees average $10. Even with a few beers, you'll have no trouble paying your bill.
