Anna’s Taqueria
They are packed and stacked and rolled and wrapped, but are these the best burritos in Boston? We're about to find out. We are at a legendary spot called Anna’s Taqueria. When it comes to Mexican street food served fast and affordably, this place is at the top of the food chain.
The original Anna’s Taqueria opened up in Brookline about 30 years ago and I’ve basically been addicted to Anna’s ever since. Over the years, they've expanded to multiple locations throughout Greater Boston. We're actually in Longwood in Boston right now by all the hospitals and it's a good thing we're near all the hospitals because I may need a cardiologist after this shoot. I'm excited. I'm sweating. I'm getting the burrito meat sweats.
The number one selling item on the menu is the Super Burrito and it is super indeed. This starts out with a 12 inch flour tortilla. They take the tortilla and some cheese and put it right into the steam cabinet. Putting it inside the steamer is key- it makes sure the tortilla does not get dried out and then the cheese gets nice and gooey and melted and that becomes the adhesive that keeps all the ingredients together. You start out with a base of the Mexican rice, you definitely want to throw on some beans. I like to get half chicken / half carnitas. The chicken itself is perfectly seasoned, nice and juicy and has a great smoky char to it. Now the carnitas, that's the slow cooked pork. That is adding a whole lot of flavor. I like to throw on a little pico de gallo, they make this fresh every single day. You definitely want to throw on some of their homemade guacamole. Yes, I know guacamole is extra, but it costs less than two bucks. If you'd like to spice things up, add on a little bit of pickled jalapeno. You definitely want the hot sauce . Anna’s homemade hot sauce is some of the best you will ever try. That is burrito perfection. I'm telling you right now we don't get any better than this. They do get a little bit bigger though.
The Super burrito was 12 inches. And then there's something called the Super Super Burrito. This is the Super Burrito. This is the Super Super. Double the rice, double the cheese, double the meat and doubly delicious. This baby is a beast, a delicious beast, but a beast nonetheless.
The name of the place is Anna’s Taqueria, so honestly tacos are in their DNA and they do them great. The tacos al pastor are definitely one of the biggest sellers. This has some beautiful slow cooked adobo pork along with some pineapple so you have that savory and sweet thing going. Those are served over some beautiful fresh corn tortillas. You have a spicy red hot sauce and then you have an avocado based crema. That combination is just so absolutely tantalizing and mouthwatering.
They've recently added Birria tacos to the menu and these things have been a massive hit since day one. Starts with a tortilla which they dip into some sauce and then they throw it right onto the griddle so it gets really kind of crispy and singed around the edges. They throw on some cheese and then in comes the birria itself - slow cooked beef that is super savory, it is served with a consomme, basically a broth made from all the juices when that beef was cooking. So you take that crispy, cheesy taco, you dip it into the broth, so it's crispy and soft and beefy and cheesy. Honestly, for less than five bucks this is one of the most delicious bargains and all of Greater Boston.
If you have a couple of minutes to hang out, I definitely recommend ordering the quesadilla. Now this doesn't look or taste anything like quesadillas you're used to. I actually love getting their vegetables. These are grilled vegetables and an incredible selection of them, awesome flavor and you kind of feel like you're doing something healthy. It's packed with veggies.
The menu here is not very big, but there is one top secret menu item that they don't even want me to talk about. It's called the Cubio and trust me you have never seen anything like it. Come on. Let's go order one. Yeah, can I please have a Cubio? Yes. Yes, three massive flour tortillas, piles of rice, absolute stacks upon stacks of white meat chicken, piles of pico, frankly an absurd amount of sour cream. Watching them assemble this thing is like watching an incredible composer. This is like a symphony of Mexican flavors all wrapped up into one super insanely delicious burrito. Are you kidding me? This thing weighs as much as a newborn baby. You're so cute. I could eat you right up. Actually, it's exactly what I'm going to do. Now listen, I know there are a million places to get a burrito these days but no one has been doing it longer or better than the OG of the burrito business: Anna’s Taqueria. That's a wrap. Get it!? Stop shooting the story is over. Goodbye.
