Greg’s

Now in its third generation, Greg's in Watertown serves standard yet solid Italian fare at bargain prices.

Atmosphere(7)

This is a real red and white checkered table cloth kind of place. Greg's was established in 1933 and the decor is anything but modern. Separate bar and dining areas.

Menu(6)

Completely standard Italian cuisine. If the menu is going to be this boring, Phantom wishes they at least offered pizza.

Portions(8)

Phantom brought a few Styrofoam containers home, although he finished the left-overs by the time he left his car.

Appetizers(8)

Extremely addictive toasted ravioli. Crisp and buttery garlic bread with cheese. Satisfying garden salad. But Phantom screamed, "where's the beef?" when he tasted his beef barley soup.

Food and Drink(8)

Phantom was surprisingly very pleased with practically every dish he tried. Top notch chicken, veal, and eggplant parmigiana prepared just the way Phantom likes it: crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Shrimp scampi was good, but a bit heavy on the oil. Very tasty chicken scaloppini marsala.

Desserts(8)

Eight options range from the classic key lime Jell-O with plenty of whipped cream to a scrumptious warm toll house pie.

Service(8)

Veteran waitstaff is very efficient, although could be a bit friendlier. Phantom loves it when he asks for water and gets an entire pitcher. Why can't it work that way with beer?

Cleanliness(7)

A few crumbs were scattered around the dining room floor. And Phantom's major pet peeve: cigarette butts in the bathroom.

Parking(7)

Mount Auburn Street in Watertown. Small adjacent parking lot fills up early, you may to find a space on the street.

Value(9)

Appetizers from $3 to $7. Entrees range between $7 and $14. Luncheon sandwiches about $3.50. Greg's decor may be out of date, but luckily its prices are as well. Excellent value.
