Versus
A burger served in an old school lunch box. Pizza shaped like pac man. And all the arcade games you could possible play for just five bucks. No you haven’t stepped back into the eighties. You have arrived at Versus.
Located on Province Street in Boston, Versus is the brainchild of restaurateur Randy Greenstein, who wanted to bring a little bit of nostalgia to Downtown Crossing.
“Versus is an arcade, a bar and a restaurant all mixed in one. So we have about 35 arcade games that are all on free play. So…people come in and they buy a wristband for $5. And it’s open play throughout the whole venue. We have shuffleboard. We have bubble hockey, we have Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch on all the TVs. It’s a lot of old games like Pac Man and Gallagher. And those kinds of things. And old school pinball just pay five bucks and play all you can. It’s really an adult playground where you’re coming in and you’re playing the games from the 80s in the 90s. And, and remember back to childhood and having a blast.”
If you can take your eyes off your game, you’ll be mesmerized by the everything else that’s going on with artwork of your favorites from the seventies, eighties and nineties like Princess Leia and Diana Ross, to Marty McFly’s Delorean.
“Between the Donkey Kong and the Diana Ross and the Princess Leia and the lunch boxes and the Mario Brothers cubes…We’re always just trying to find a fun little moment to have a smile, you know?”
The menu at Versus will make your belly smile.
There are flaming hot onion rings, that will set your mouth on fire….
Mac n Cheese Bites, spiked with crumbled bacon and served with ketchup and savory ranch for dipping…..
And Cheese Steak Spring Rolls, perfect for snacking over some skeeball.
“It’s hot and gooey and cheesy and steak to wash it all.”Wings get an old school spin when they’re slathered in a Dr Pepper sauce.
“The Dr Pepper is cool because it’s unique. So it’s kind of a tangy, you know, sugary flavor like a Dr. Pepper. And it’s marinated in the chicken so you can get buffalo wings but the Dr. Pepper one’s my favorite.”
And for a true show stopper, start off with a Jumbo Pretzel.
The pretzel is ginormous. It’s as big as my head and it’s literally just a soft, you know, perfectly baked, gigantic pretzel. You could squirt cheese whiz all over it or on a mustard. It’s amazing.
Other shareable selections include the Pacman pizza which bares a distinct resemblance to its namesake.
“So the Pac Man pizza is literally a full round pizza with one slice taken out. So when you’re looking at it, and it gets delivered to your table, it literally looks like Pac Man.
We have five different kinds of pizzas. I usually go with the cheese, but at the same time, there’s an amazing buffalo chicken one and a grilled steak and cheese one. They’re great.”
The sandwich selection at Versus is spot on.
There’s the fried chicken sandwich topped with lettuce, tomato and a spicy chili mayo…
And a Steak and Cheese slathered with that bright yellow shelf stable favorite, Cheez Whiz.
“It’s a bold flavor and we want to be different and we want to be fun. So it’s like Cheez Whiz and your steak and cheese with peppers and onions. And you know, the more gooey and delicious it is the better.”
And if that doesn’t take you back, the Little Mac will. This quarter pound burger comes topped with lettuce, tomato and American cheese and it’s served in this adorable lunch box with tots.
“Basically, it’s a quarter pound burger…and it comes in a lunch box like an 80s lunch box and super cool. People love getting the burger and the box delivered like you’re going to school or something.”
For a sweet treat at the end of your meal, you can opt for housemade versions of classic candy bars like Snickers and Twix. Or suck back one of their creative cocktails, available in two sizes.
“You can order your drinks in two different ways in single player and multiplayer and the multiplayer comes in these cool like Nintendo Mario Brothers cubes…. And then you get any one of our cocktails in that multiplayer cube.”
And after you drank, dined and added your name to the high score list, you’re going to leave with full belly, and some fun memories when you visit Versus.
“It is literally all about fun. Everything we do here at Versus is fun, fun, fun. It’s something different. Nothing else exists like this in downtown Boston. And I think that you know, that’s what people are looking for. Having an interactive experience in life and coming to a bar, having a drink, having something to eat and playing games and just having fun. Everyone here is happy at all times. It’s the coolest thing.”
