“We're a small little restaurant.. in the center of town. Wicked comfortable setting. We have a combination of both burgers, sandwiches and a lot of vegan food, great draft list a lot of local beers. A lot of people like to consider this place like their second home. People can just come in here, chill, feel at home, they can just come in straight from work, grab a couple of beers, and just keep it nice and relaxed.”
Owner Tyler MacDonald is a hometown guy who wanted to bring a place that has all the things he likes in a restaurant and put it all under one roof.
“I grew up in Newmarket my whole life. So it's really a dream come true for me to like be able to open my own place and the town I grew up and like be able to do that and be a part of this town. So it's been really fun.”
There are many ways to kick off your meal. But nothing is better than The Oak House’s fries. Each one hand punched fresh- so every last bite is potato perfection.
“We hand cut them every morning. We go through about 150 pounds potatoes every day. Anything that we can make from scratch we're going to do from scratch.
And the kitchen likes to get creative when it comes to toppings. With options like Street Corn Fries- topped with creamy queso, chorizo and corn. Or the Bee Bop fries topped with peanut sauce and sweet chili sprinkled with cashews and sesame seeds for added crunch.
“There's the creaminess of the peanut sauce the jaminess of the sweet chili and then you get the crunch of the cashews and sesame seeds. It's like sweet, salty, savory. They're amazing.”
And for a tried and true Canadian classic, get yourself some poutine, smothered in gravy, cheese curds, and slow smoked brisket.
“Definitely gooey.you get the little cheese pull when you get that perfect bite and then like the gravy just kind of coats your mouth. The fries are like nice and crispy. So it's like a nice balanced crunchy, gooey. It's great”
Other apps include Nachos piled up with all of the good stuff. And the flavorful Bang Bang Cauliflower.
“We deep fry our cauliflower in our sweet chili sauce. And top it with cashews, sesame seeds and scallions, so it's nice and tangy. Then you get like super crunchy cauliflower that's soft in the middle. And it's a giant portion people go crazy for it.”
Sandwiches are definitely the specialty at The Oak House. With options like the BBQ Sammie topped with slow smoked pulled pork, pickles and slaw or the heavenly Brisket Grilled Cheese.
“It's simple, but it's good. Our brisket is just so tender. And then we just put it with some Cabot cheddar, jalapenos and our chipotle mayo and slap it between some sourdough. It's like gooey deliciousness. It's like so good.”
There’s the so called ‘Chicky Chicky Parm Parm’ topped with marinara, lots of mozzarella, and provolone and garlic aioli. Or the Oak House mash up of a Cuban and a grilled cheese layered with Pork, Bacon, Swiss, pickles and maple mustard.
"You got like a lot sharpness from the pickles and onions. And then it kind of gets rounded out by the garlic mayo and the maple mustard. And then you hit the pork that's like kind of just bursts of like lemon, lime orangey notes in there ..and then the crispy bread. It's really really great.”
Other handhelds include a line of of top-quality burgers like Rocky Raccoon
“ It's kind of our play on a bar backyard barbecue burger. So ranch barbecue sauce and then like a nice big pile of coleslaw on there. And then we add our peppers and onions to it. And then just a little bit of Swiss cheese. It's really, really good.”
Vegans will enjoy the Out and In Burger, piled up with pickled onion relish, fancy sauce and vegan cheese and bacon. And traditionalists will want to try the Beastro Burger topped with creamy gouda, sweet onion jam, pickles and garlic mayo.
“There's like the nice snap of the dill pickles, the burger. Just nice and juicy and you hit the Onion Jam and the gouda at the same time. And that's like unctuous kind of melt in your mouth goodness. And then hit the lettuce and tomato for a little added crunch on top. And it's like nice, perfect balance.”
