The Hidden Pig
There’s bacon on the burgers.
There’s bacon on boards.
There’s even bacon in the beverages.
In fact you’ll find bacon just about everywhere at The Hidden Pig.
New to Haverhill, The Hidden Pig is an American style gastro pub specializing in burgers, brunch and of course, bacon. Owner Phillip Bentham set out to create a cozy yet energetic spot with a little something for everyone. So he decked the place out with exposed brick, reclaimed wood and a bar serving a rotating selection of craft beers, and some super creative cocktails.
“You just you can come here for anything and everything. It’s just a place for everything to watch a game here. You can eat here. You can just have a craft beer. Extremely cozy, very comfortable atmosphere we get that all the time. That was our goal. We wanted to make it a place for everybody to do anything.”
And with the help of General Manager Ashley Holt, he’s designed a menu of over the top comfort food favorites.
“We’re mainly known for burgers. But we offer so much more than just burgers. Just a unique levels of food that we have with the Asian cuisine with the pork fried rice bowl to the mac and cheese is to the craft beer list to the brunch.
“We definitely care very much about what food we put out….and we want to make everybody happy. And that’s not even being cliche or anything I like genuinely want people to enjoy the food.”
So Phantom bellied up to the bar with some friends and made a pig of himself in search of THE PERFECT MEAL.
The appetizer section of the Hidden Pig menu would make your cardiologist cringe. There’s poutine loaded up with indulgent gravy, lots of pork belly, cheese curds and a sunny side egg on top….
And oversized wings slathered in mojo sauce.
“Chicken wings are a little different than your typical place. They’re bigger. They’re meatier.
It’s not just a little bone in your hand. You actually get a hold it with two hands and bite into it.”
You could order one of their enormous trays of nachos jacked up with housemade cheese sauce, corn salsa, guacamole and a cotija lime creme. But, you’d be remiss if didn’t order the Bacon Board.
“Bacon board is a very unique dish here. We get three different types of bacon on there. You’ve got an apple wood bacon. You get a pork belly and you get a jalapeno crusted bacon on there comes a bacon fat jam. And little crostini bread so you can kind of make a little sandwich with it. You can’t go wrong with bacon.
Since their known for their burgers, ordering a pattie should be a priority. There’s The Reaper: A burger that will kill any appetite piled up with white cheddar, jalapeno bacon, sliced jalapenos, a fried green tomato and a hot pepper spread. Or this one affectionately known as The Fancy Pants- since it’s dressed with a truffle aioli.
But the burger that will blow you away is Big Bad Wolf. This behemouth is topped with blueberry jam, confit pork belly and a maple bacon aioli- a combination which has customers curious.
“I always thought it was weird at first. It’s definitely unique.”
“A lot of people will get in there like No, I don’t think I’m going to get that and I always tell people if you get in you don’t like it. I’ll buy it for you. And usually people like all right, fine free meal and then I get it now I got we’ll pay for that. That was amazing. And then it come in and get all the time.”
Handhelds at the Hidden Pig range from Crispy Pork Lettuce Wraps layered with apple slaw in a thai ginger glaze. To a BLT featuring thick cut bacon and orange cheddar. And if you don’t mind getting a bit chubby, get yourself the Chubby Chicken.
“Chubby Chicken. I came up with that name, because it is chubby.”
“It’s just a double deep fried chicken breast on a just a classic sandwich. It’s one of those high riding sandwiches. Yeah it’s a bit crunchy. It’s juicy we have our we have a special sauce we put on that call are hidden sauce. Something different. Southern styled fried chicken sandwich that really again you can’t really find anywhere else in the area.”
If you happen to be in Haverhill during the weekend, you can hit up the Hidden Pig’s brunch, where the offerings include a breakfast sandwich that’s sure to get your day going, loaded up with eggs, avocado, spicy aioli and of course, bacon. Or this chorizo skillet- a tasty mixture of potato, sausage, sofrito and cheese sauce. But according to Phantom, the Chicken and Waffles are your best bet at brunch.
“Fried chicken and waffles is so good. It’s bacon bits within the waffle and then fried chicken breast on top with a maple bacon butter and also a slice of bacon on top. And once you put the gravy and the syrup all together it’s so good. “
