The Fat Cat
Mac and Cheese. Awesome Nachos. Tons of Wings. Creamy Chowder. And juicy Steak.
All of it served in big portions at small prices. So its no wonder the dining room is always packed, at The Fat Cat.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: The Fat Cat is comfort food. Big flavors, big bold dishes, huge portions and great value for what you get.
Located on Hancock Street in the heart of Quincy Center, The Fat Cat is big and busy.
On any given night, it can feel like the whole city is here.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: Its always busy. So its always hopping, people are always running around, enjoying themselves, a lot of regular customers, a lot of familiar faces, so everyone kind of knows each other when they come in and see each other.
And a lot of them are here to see owner Neil Kiley, whos a Quincy kid all the way.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: I grew up in Quincy. Born and raised up by Hospital Hill, went to North Quincy High School. Being able to come back to Quincy and build a restaurant like this was my dream.
And dream come true. Not just for Neil, but for anyone looking for heaping plates of comfort food at prices everyone can afford.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: I want you to feel like a fat cat. I want you to feel like this is the sort of thing that you would want to have your friends come to your house and eat. Thats the way I see it. This is my house and Im inviting you to come eat at it.
In fact, this is Neils new house, because his first place was way too small for everyone who wanted to visit. The original Fat Cat opened thirteen years ago in a cramped sixty-seat space right around the corner. And its popularity became a problem.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: It got really busy and people got turned off by the smallness of it, and the wait times, and things of that sort. So we thought the right thing to do was to update, expand, and move to a larger location.
So the new spot has 150 seats, an enormous bar, and a big kitchen. But that doesnt mean they forgot where they came from.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: We actually have a mural that was drawn by my sister, that has the entire frontage of the old Fat Cat along with Sullys which was a bar in Quincy, all on the back wall. Its fantastic.
When you come to the Fat Cat, be prepared to get a little fat, because the menu here is filled with everything you want to eat, like handcut fries in all kinds of flavors.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: We have Cajun, we have garlic Parmesan, we have fajita, weve got a bunch of different dipping sauces, all fried to order, come straight out, theyre delicious.
When it comes to wings, from Buffalo, to Asian, to Cajun, the options are almost endless.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: Were well known for sauces, on sauces, on sauces. So we have probably 15 different types of wings that you can get, combine, mix, match, different sauces whatever you want we got.
Nachos here go way beyond the standard stack, with choices like fiery Buffalo Chicken with Bacon and Blue Cheese, or the luxurious Lobster, Crab, and Corn Salsa.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: Its lobster, its crab, its Parmesan, its cheddar, its salsa, sour cream and avocado. Youre gonna get that seafood flavor that most people recognize in New England, but also kind of that Southwestern flavor so you kind of get the best of both worlds.
Entrees at The Fat Cat are big; in size, flavor, and value. Theres sliced Hanger Steak with Red Bliss Potatoes and grilled Asparagus, a full rack of house smoked Baby Back Ribs, and a big bowl of Penne, Pancetta, Peas, and Parmesan, in a Garlic Cream Sauce.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: Its kind of a throwback dish. Its got a lot of flavor to it. Its a really really really nice dish.
But the pasta dish that put The Fat Cat on the map is most definitely their Mac and Cheese.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: Signature dish is our Mac and Cheese. Its a blend of cavatappi pasta with four different cheeses. Its parmesan, cheddar, mozzarella and blue cheese. Thats all cooked together with heavy cream, garlic, tossed all together, the creaminess of this dish is fantastic. Its just such a good mac and cheese.
So its no wonder that order, after order, after order of this stuff is coming out of the kitchen. And most of those orders arent just Mac and Cheese, theyre Lobster Mac and Cheese, a Fat Cat favorite for more than a decade.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: Were kind of the first place around the area to have lobster mac and cheese and now its kind of everywhere. So the idea that we were more the originator than anything else. Its that throwback of well, you have to try the Fat Cat lobster mac and cheese, because its better than all the others.
Rounding out the menu are hefty sandwiches like Pulled Pork smothered with onion strings, and Roasted Turkey on Ciabatta with Cranberry Mango Chutney, Cornbread Stuffing, Chipotle Mayo, and Bacon.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: Its Thanksgiving on a bun.
Seafood fans definitely wont want to miss the Baked Haddock Chowder.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: Its basically a cream sauce chowder thats made to order. So its got littleneck clams. Its got bacon bits. Its got corn. Its got tomatoes. Its got fingerling potatoes, all in this chowder with a baked haddock on top that has a little bit of a Dijon panko crust. Its absolutely fantastic. Once you try it, youll get it every time you come here.
And if you somehow save room for dessert, the Pint Glass Sundae is the perfect way to end your meal.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: Vanilla ice cream, caramel, chocolate, blueberry puree, whipped cream, some pecans, all built in a pint glass. It reminds me of going to Brighams when I was a kid.
And for this Quincy kid, nothing is sweeter than having a few hundred friends over for dinner.
Neil Kiley Owner, The Fat Cat: I think you should come to The Fat Cat because were going to treat you like youre family. Were going to treat you like youre coming into our house. And we want everyone to have a good time when they come in our house.
