Mom & Pop’s Burgers
This is Mom.
“You have a cheeseburger naked fries and a chocolate frappe?”
And this is Pop.
“All for here guys?”
And together, they’re making some of the best burgers around at Mom & Pops.
Located in Chatham, Massachusetts, Mom & Pop’s is a family-friendly spot run by owners Pelinda and Thomas Deegan or as they’re known to their regulars, Mom & Pop.
“Mom & Pops is a mom and pop burger restaurant owned by my wife Pelinda and I. Our focus is burgers. But we also do have a mix of kind of East and West Coast offerings that reflects the backgrounds of my wife and I. I am from New England. And my wife is Filipina. We met when we were in California, so we kind of have a mix of both coasts with some Philippine offerings.”
The space itself is super casual with counter service, a comfy dining room, and a fun patio for when the weather is nice. The couple strives to make their restaurant warm and welcoming whether you’re eight or eighty.
“I want them from the second they pull into our lot, to feel like this place is awesome. I want their experience in everything they encounter here. From the decor inside to the staff they meet at the front of the house to the food they get to be just an absolutely outstanding experience for them and unique and memorable.”
The focus of the menu is that All American staple, the burger.
“I love burgers. Everyone loves burgers. We do a smash style and we also have a steam cheeseburger on the menu. We butcher and grind our own beef in house. So we have our own unique blends, which results in an absolutely delicious burger.”
If you want to keep it simple, you can go with the standard.
“Our standard cheeseburger has of course our beef patty, American cheese, lettuce, onion, pickles, and our burger sauce…which is a you know, traditional ketchup and mayo based sauce with some other ingredients that we’ve mixed in there. It’s incredibly flavorful because of the patty that we’re using itself, because it’s the Smash burger, you’re going to have that that crusting on the on the one side. The texture of our bun is perfect so that you just get it and have a nice bite all together. So it’s just really all comes together. Very juicy. Absolutely delicious.”
There’s also the California Burger, topped with Pepper Jack Cheese, Bacon, Lettuce, and Avocado.
The Naughty Diablo Burger with ghost pepper cheddar, bacon, avocado, picked jalapeno and shishito peppers. And for something different, try something called the Steamed Cheeseburger, a delicacy you can usually only find in Tom’s hometown.
“There are a few places in Connecticut in Meriden, particular, where we get our steamed cheeseburgers.
There’s a custom chest that you need to purchase and there’s a basin at the bottom where you you fill with water, heat that water so it steams up throughout the chest. You’re putting the beef and a cheddar in.
And you’re steaming both of them. It looks messy. It eats a bit messy. It’s very juicy. You get a lot of the flavor from the the cheese as well as the beef. The textures going to feel different. The texture is somewhat more of a juicier meatloaf. It definitely takes me back to my hometown in Meriden, Connecticut.”
If you want something from Pelinda’s home, get the Filipino Pork Burger topped with a housemade papaya slaw and garlic chili mayo. Or one of her lumpias.
“Lumpia is a Filipino pork egg roll. I myself actually had never had a Filipino eggrolll until I met my wife. And then I had them I couldn’t stop eating them. “
Each one of these beauties is hand-rolled and fried to order.
“I usually start with a diamond shape wrapper. Kind of have to thin out the meat. Fold up the bottom. Give it a good pinch. Press on the end and roll it up. And then you seal it with this egg wash and there you have it. In a lumpia order you get four lumpias. We cut it in half so you get 8 bite sized pieces. It is usually dipped in this Filipino sweet chili sauce. It has a little bit of a pic a little bit of a tartness and sweetness to it. I can probably eat I can snack on it all day. It’s amazing.”
Other snacks include Mom & Pops hand cut fries.
And whether you get them naked, topped with with chili, cheese and onion…
Or loaded up with grilled onions and cheese sauce, you’re going to love ’em because they’re cut on site.
“So having a fresh french fry versus a frozen french fry, I think they’re night and day.
The texture is outstanding on the outside and on the inside. It’s not easy. It’s a process. It takes us a lot of time, but it results in an absolutely delicious fry.”
Other options include the Mission Dog, loaded up with bacon, grilled onion, and jalapeno Peppers.
And since you’re on the Cape, you may want to indulge in a lobster roll and here it’s as fresh as it gets.
It’s going to be incredibly fresh, you know, the texture of a fresh lobster roll versus a frozen roll is going to be you know, entirely different. So there’s a nice crispness, you know, to the lobster meat itself, its knuckle claw tail meat. We dress it on the line with a fresh lemon zest. So it’s really really delicious.”
And whether you’re hankering for something from the east coast, or the far east, the only place to stop is Mom & Pops.
