When you’re looking for an over-the-top burger.
“You definitely, definitely need a fork and a knife and three extra napkins.”
Potato Skins stuffed with your favorite BBQ.
“It’s so like it’s kind of like smokey but sweet and a little bit spicy.”
The freshest seafood in the area.
“It’s like if you’re a seafood lover, you’re gonna love this.”
And all the food you crave, you’ll find there’s no way quite like the Midway.
Located in Dedham, the Midway restaurant is a beloved institution with a cult-like following.
“It’s like your mom and dad are cooking.”
“It kind of feels like home when you eat here.”
“The food is exquisite. Absolutely exquisite.”
“Where you gonna get a dinner for the price of a sandwich? No where.”
“The food is unbelievable. The value is unbelievable. You get so much food for prices you would find in the seventies.”
For over seventy years, the Midway has been serving big portions of the food you love at pocket friendly prices. This family run institution started way back in 1947 by Al Jenks. Flash forward to now and his grandson, Bob is carrying on this tasty family tradition.
“Here it’s quality. Everything is made from scratch. Our fish is not frozen. I’m probably the only one in town that butchers their own meat til this day. All of our steaks are hand carve. We put our all into it.”
And the “hostess with the most-est” at the Midway is Bob’s wife Donna, who always greets customers with a smile and some sass.
“How you doing tonight.
“I’m doing fabulous this evening.
“Hi Nancy How are you?”
“Always nice to see you.”
“How is everything Mary?”
“How is your lobster sliders?”
And she’s always making sure Bob and his kitchen staff are giving the customers exactly what they’re looking for.
“I’m the front of the house. And you know, I’m kind of like his eyes. He hand cuts all of the steaks. He’s downstairs too like creating specials and you know, making the fresh soups and sauces. But he is also on the line. He’s part of the big team. He leads by example.”
There’s only one way to start your meal at the Midway. And that’s with an old school Shrimp Cocktail. But this is no ordinary shrimp cocktail, because its served with a sauce that has followed the Jenks family for three generations and customers just can’t get enough of it.
“People always say it’s all about the sauce.”
People also rave about the Jack Daniels Potato Skins.
“Potatoes skins and BBQ pork is phenomenal. It’s a fresh baked potato hollowed out. Fresh mashed potatoes, homemade barbecued pulled pork and our homemade Jack Daniels sauce, jack cheese melted on top of it. It’s smoky but sweet and a little bit spicy but I think the cheese on top for kind of gives a little little kick. It’s just like phenomenal.”
If you’re looking for something handheld, you better come hungry. Especially if you order one of the Midway’s club sandwiches.
“Oh my god, the club sandwiches are like this big. So be prepared guys and girls if in the mood for our club sandwich. You asked all right, you’re gonna get it. It’s ginormous.”
Then there’s the Pulled Pork Burger.
“It’s an 8 ounce grilled burger and it’s topped with homemade BBQ pulled pork on a toasted roll with our homemade coleslaw. All the flavors together are phenomenal. The cold texture and crunchiness from the coleslaw and the homemade barbecued pulled pork, just in conjunction with the hamburger is just like amazing.”
Entrees at the Midway range from old school to elegant. There’s the 14 ounce Center Cut Pork Chop that’s hand cut on site and seasoned with applewood. And the flavor packed Pistachio Crusted Haddock.
“It’s fresh Haddock that’s baked in the oven with light butter, fresh pistachio crumb topping. It’s plated with roasted potatoes, fresh grilled asparagus and drizzled with balsamic glaze.
This is one of those plates where you’re going to go to five star restaurants and they might not be going to be the same. Ours it’s going to be better.”
Prime rib is available on most nights. But it’s best to come on Wednesdays, when for under 15 bucks, you can feast on this marvelous mound of meat.
“Every Wednesday, the 11 ounce grilled prime or roast prime it is for $14.99 and it’s like enormous.”
Just as big on value is the Boiled Lobster dinner – a steal compared to most places at under twenty bucks.
“The philosophy to the Midway is good food at a reasonable price. And that’s what keeps the customers coming back.
So what’s the one and a quarter pound steamed lobster. And we serve it with fresh drawn butter and everything is better with butter. “
And almost anything is better when you pair it with the Oreo Skillet Brownie Sundae, a pile up of yuminess you cannot possibly finish on your own.
“You’re definitely gonna want to share this one.”
And whether you’ve been a regular at the Midway for decades or if this is your first time, Donna and her team will treat you like family.
“One of my philosophies is always treat the customers as if this is the first visit, and they will always come back. Everybody is like extended family, we treat them like that. We always try our best to do our best all the time.”
