Hunter’s Kitchen and Bar
A cozy, inviting space.
“It’s home away from home.”
A menu stacked with soul satisfying dishes.
“The menu here at Hunters is really focused on Southern Comfort food.”
And some warm Southern Hospitality to match.
“I think all those things coming together at once in one place is very special. And I think that’s why everyone should come to Hunter’s.”
Located in South Boston, Hunter’s Kitchen and Bar is the kind of place that makes you feel warm all over.
“Hunters Kitchen and Bar is a southern inspired restaurant. The idea was to bring a little bit of the South to South Boston.”
Culinary Director Nick Dixon and Chef De Cuisine Lambert Givens created a menu lined with all of your favorite comfort foods, with an atmosphere to match.
“When you’re walking through the neighborhood.. you’re gonna see pine trees and then you walk into all this glowing golden reclaimed wood and these two beautiful fireplaces. It kind of just feels like you’re in like a cabin in the woods but in Boston. We chose a bunch of dishes that would be super cozy and kind of fit the room. And the food is kind of prepared in ways that we would want to eat it if we were dining here.”
And Chef Lambert certainly prepares the food the way he likes to eat, using tricks and tips he learned from his grandmother growing up.
“My style of cooking is putting lots of time and just love. She taught me that from a very young age, and that was just something that’s always stuck with me.”
There are many ways to kick off your Hunter’s experience like Smoked Spicy Wings served with buttermilk dressing. Craveable Popcorn Chicken Bites presented over a bed of honey mustard.
And a memorable Mac and Cheese made with a combination of cheddar, Parmesan and Raclette.
“When you take a bite of the mac and cheese, it has this crispy cheesy skin on top and it just has so much flavor it just really is like all in your face. Big bold flavors.”
But for a true crowd please, Honey Butter Cornbread is a must.
“The cornbread here at Hunter’s is cooked to order we top the cornbread with like a big spoonful of whipped butter and then it kind of just melts at the table. And then you see like groups kind of ooing and eyeing about how much butter is actually on the cornbread.”
Lots of southern staples make an appearance on the entree section of the menu.
Like Fried Chicken and Waffles topped with whipped butter and a habanero lavender honey and perfectly smoked St. Louis Ribs.
“They’re fall off the bone, but you still have like this little tug. And we have this killer barbecue sauce, bourbon barbecue sauce that we make in house here I think that complements our ribs so well.”
But according to Nick, the best part of this dish is the gravy you’ll find on the mashed potatoes.
“I am very passionate about gravy. I think we all… We put a ton of love into it. Really taking time to do it the right way. It’s amazing.”
There are creamy, dreamy Shrimp & Grits and for some real south in your mouth, you’ve got to get Lambo’s Gumbo.
When you take the first bite of this gumbo, you get tons of like this Creole like flavor and then the spices kind of hits you at the end. We have this Charleston rice that we use…and I think it’s just leveled up the gumbo that much more. In the winter time this is absolutely a gumbo that you need to have.”
But for the ultimate way to warm up Southern style, dive into some Chicken and Dumplings.
“You have to try the chicken and dumplings. We roast off the chickens, make a big rich gravy and roast off some fresh vegetables. We put that all in the Dutch oven and then all the biscuits get mixed to order and when you put your spoon into it and you take a bite, it’s just like super fluffy. It’s airy. When it comes to the table. It comes out simmering in the Dutch oven. They take the lid off, the steam comes up you smell all the aromatics. It’s great.”
Hunter’s has a list of handhelds you’ll want to take your mittens off for. Like this beautiful Brisket Sandwich topped with spicy Cajun slaw, bread and butter pickles and habanero hot sauce or the super juicy Wagyu Smash.
“We smashed the Wagyu beef down on top of it so the onions kind of carmelize and the cheese kind of melts over the burger onto the flattop you get those little crispy cheesy edges to it topped on a Martin’s potato bun. You can’t miss it.”
And for one of the best fried chicken sandwiches this side of Nashville, get the Hot and Messy.
“Oh it’s hot and messy. We’ve created this Nashville Hot shake, that gives it the chicken sandwich this perfect amount of heat and then we have our Hunter sauce, that Martins potato bun. It’s just like all comes together so well.”
And for a sweet ending to an already decadent meal, there are shareable beignets with chocolate sauce, and a Bourbon butter cake you’ll want all for yourself.
“When you bite into it, you’re going to get the crispy edges and then the ooey gooey center and it’s just this like flavor of butter and bourbon and sugar. It’s amazing.”
And because of the hard work and dedication of this team, pretty much everything is amazing at Hunter’s Kitchen and Bar.
“We’ve really tried to focus on doing things the hard way and I think with Southern food The trick is to do things the hard way.”
