Frost Bar at Ocean Edge
It’s winter time and we are ready to eat. Welcome to the Phantom Gourmet. I’m Dan Andelman. And if you’re looking for a truly unique dining destination this winter, you can’t do much better than this. We are at the spectacular Ocean Edge resort in Brewster, Massachusetts, and they have transformed one of the Cape’s most popular summertime dining destinations into a winter wonderland. Welcome to the Frost Bar at Ocean edge.
The Frost Bar is really a unique experience, we took advantage of our great view, great opportunity to go year round and make an experience to last throughout the winter. I think when you’re in here, you kind of just transposed into that winter wonderland experience. We’ve highlighted a lot of areas in the blue lights to kind of give it that frosty feeling to whisk away into that warm and forget about life for a while now you’re in that cold environment, but still can enjoy yourself.
Now the premier attraction here at the Frost Bar are the igloos, these are incredible igloos you have to reserve them ahead of time. They are big, they are private, you have your own server, you have Bluetooth speakers, you have lights, you have food, you have drinks, it’s the perfect winter getaway. Let’s get our igloo on. Now I’ve dined in a few igloos in my day, but these are like the Taj Mahal of igloos. There’s Adirondack chairs with nice furry fuzzy blankets, you have your own personal heater so it is plenty warm in here. And this is really all about being social so the food matches the mood. So this is all stuff that you can just pick and share with a group of friends.
The food that we’ve created to go in there is really to be able to eat with your hands or very minimal utensils. It’s more like you’re sitting around in your living room on the couch and just having some snack food and whatnot and you can have a plate with yourself or you can share with the friends and family that you have with you.
When you go to the Cape, I’m always going to start a meal with something from the raw bar, got your oysters on the half shell big fat cocktail shrimp, it’s a nice fresh shucked lobster that’s how you want to start your meal. You want something to snack on, get their homemade potato chips. They are big and thick and crunchy. And talk about hearty, this is like Oktoberfest right in the middle of winter on Cape Cod, get a German sausage platter. These are beautiful, they are sliced. They’re served with some accoutrement on a nice wooden board. No matter how bad the winter gets, this will warm you up. Of course you might want to have a drink to go with it all you can get a nice ginger hot toddy to warm you up. But I would go for the Jack Frost. This has Tito’s vodka, it has some blue curacao, it has some pineapple, some coconut around the edge like a little tropical vacation right in the middle of a Cape Cod winter.
Now if you’re not into the whole igloo thing, you can just walk in right here anytime. This is the Frost Bar at Ocean edge. When you come to the Frost Bar, you feel like you’re on vacation, you got room to stretch out, you’re around people who are having fun, you have drinks, you have food, you’re just here for a good time. And when you talk about the most popular dishes at the Frost Bar, they are all perfect for warming up on a cold night.
Part of the Frost Bar and the beauty of New England food at this time of year is that it’s either stewed or braised right so it’s all warm and hearty and it feels good in the tummy.
You’re down the Cape. Of course you got to start your meal with a bowl of clam chowder thick creamy chock full of fresh clams, you’re not going to go wrong with scallops and their sea scallops are so pumped so sweet, so juicy, so fresh, perfect way to start a meal at the Frost Bar. Now if you really want something to warm your bones and make you feel just like a mother’s hug, you gotta get a steaming hot bowl of the Sea Captain Stew.
The stew is really our take on cioppino if will.
This to me is the top item you must get at the Frost Bar. This has lobster, poached cod, it has fingerling potatoes, it has tomatoes, it is served piping hot. It is made fresh to order every sip of this is velvety, sweet, delicious, and just a pure taste of Cape Cod heaven. Now you know how they say go bigger go home. Well, I never want to go home because this whole place is amazing. But also it’s going to take me a while to get through this entire giant tomahawk steak. This is a signature bone-in ribeye steak. It is sliced to order, served with a variety of sauces, people go for seafood on the Cape, but if you want a great steak, get a tomahawk at the Frost Bar. Now that is how you do winter time on Cape Cod.
When it comes to dessert, there’s only one thing you need to know and that’s s’mores. But actually they do it two different ways. So you can do a s’mores cookie sandwich, this thing has a couple of soft fresh baked chocolate chip cookies, some chocolate ice cream and the toasted marshmallows all over the side. I mean, how much fun is that? And then there’s the s’mores skillet, sort of like a deconstructed s’mores if you will you have a piping odd skillet full of melted chocolate and the money marshmallows. You got the graham crackers for a little bit of dipping that is dessert that is delightful.
The overall experience is going to be a fun energetic experience whether you dine in the Frost Bar or whether you dine in the igloos. You just kind of forget that you’re on the Cape you forget sometimes it’s actually cold outside. It definitely is that warmth in a Frost environment.
So whether you want to sit by the fire pit at the bar or in your own private igloo, the cure to a frosty night is a meal at the Frost Bar at Ocean edge.
