Donut King
Jennifer Ty is a lady who loves a good smile.
“I’m a registered pediatric dental hygienist. During the pandemic my dental office was closed for three months.”
But rather than just sit back and binge-watch TV, she decided to take her creativity and her love for making smiles and brought it to her parents’ business. So now, believe it or not, this dental hygienist is designing donuts guaranteed to turn any frown upside down.
“I love making people confident with their smiles but also love seeing their big smiles when they come see our donuts. So in both my jobs, I am creating smile.”
And you’ll be smiling from ear to ear when you visit Jennifer and her family at Donut King. Since 1987, Donut King has been serving hot, fresh donuts in the town of Weymouth, Massachusetts. It all started when Sina and Denise Ty immigrated to the United States and decided to create a sweet spot that they could pass onto their three daughters, Lindsay, Chelsea and Jennifer.
“My parents are Sin and Denise Ty and they’re both refugees from Cambodia and survivors of the Khmer Rouge. They wanted to start a business where they could pass it down from generations to generations. I’m very proud of what they’ve done. They came from nothing and they came to this donut shop that’s been well known. Everyone on the South Shore tells us that we have the best donuts around and I’m really proud of them.”
The whole Donut King experience starts the second you exit your car, and catch a whiff of the sweet aroma of the 57 varieties of donuts all made by baker Raymond Taylor.
“When somebody comes in, they smell the donut, the first thing when they walk in that door, it’s just the look on their faces. Oh, I gotta have that one. We carry our list of different types of donuts here, so that way they can see it as they come in and decide as they get there. We sell a lot of different stuff. So it’s pretty hard to keep up with.”
And deciding is almost impossible. To narrow it down, start by choosing whether you want a cake donut or a yeast donut.
“A cake donut is baking powder and baking soda. It’s just like a birthday cake. Whereas the yeast is made with the yeast. Cake donut would have the spices of like the nutmeg, the cinnamon in it. The yeast would be like a fluffy pillow and it’s got the sugar on the outside and it just like melts in your mouth.”
From there, the possibilities are endless. You could go for one of the classics like glazed chocolate or honey dipped. Or try over the top creations like this donut spiked with a mini cannoli. Or this one filled with banana pudding and topped with a Nilla wafer and cream. And for a nostalgic way to start your day, treat yourself to some Fruity Pebbles.
“So these are the yeast raised donuts. They just got done being fried. This is our homemade strawberry frosting which we make fresh daily. Just mix it in with some crunchy fruity pebbles and there you have it. You get the crunch. You get the sweet. It really brings you back to your childhood.”
Another homage to childhood breakfast, includes this jelly filled donut topped with Strawberry Pop Tarts.
“It’s delicious. It reminds me of the strawberry strudel that I had growing up as a kid.” And if flapjacks are your thing, a Blueberry Pancake Donut is a must. “This is our blueberry pancake donut. It has fresh blueberries. Vanilla cream. It is on our raised yeast donut. And it reminds me of blueberry pancakes because I can just drizzle this syrup right on top. When you close your eyes you definitely feel like you’re eating a fresh blueberry pancakes.”
Donut King also has treats topped with all of your favorite candies and sweets, from Snickers to M&Ms and Oreo Crumbles. Plus, there are spins on your favorite cakes like this red velvet donut, or the so called Birthday Cake Donut.
“It is one of our cake doughnuts. It’s filled with the confetti sprinkles. So when you bite into it, it reveals the rainbow sprinkles inside. You can have your birthday every day with this kind of donut.”
And for a twist on a nostalgic campfire favorite, try the S’mores.
“The S’mores donut is on a raised yeast donut, frosted with our handmade chocolate frosting. It reminds you of being at the campfire with friends and family.”
For a donut that CAN FEED A FAMILY, you can order a donut cake. This supersized ring of deliciousness is customizable and makes any occasion a memorable one.
“So the donut cakes are really popular here at Donut King. We offer many flavors, you can choose your frosting flavors. You can also have writing on it. So it’s really customizable. They will taste like your traditional donut, but just on a larger scale.”
And for some traditional donuts presented in an untraditional way, get a bouquet.
“Who wouldn’t want a bouquet of doughnuts rather than the flowers?”
And if these hot, fresh, deliciously different donuts don’t make you smile, the sweet staff behind the counter most certainly will, when you visit Donut King.
