It’s time to get saucy y’all. We are on Washington Street in Newton Corner just off the Mass Pike at a little but legendary sports bar known as Buff’s Pub. And I’ll tell you this right now, if you are a chicken wing fanatic like I am, there was no better place to go to get your wing on than right here at Buff’s.
You take a look around this place and the first thing you think of is this is what a chicken wing joint is supposed to look like. It’s kind of dark. It’s kind of cramped. It’s kind of crowded. There’s a long bar, lots of televisions, sports uniforms up on the wall, and all of their awards for serving some of the best wings in Greater Boston.
The kitchen back here is small, I mean tiny like there’s only a few fryolators and they are working basically 24/7. They use high quality chicken, I’m talking fresh, never frozen, that makes a big difference. Sauces are definitely one of the main reasons why Buff’s stands out from all the other wing joints. They make them super flavorful and they absolutely soak and douse every wing. So every corner, every crevice, every nook and cranny of your wing will be completely drenched in that sweet elixir.
A large order of wings here comes with 20 pieces. A small order is just 10. In my case, I’m gonna get 20 Buffalo, 20 Spicy Teriyaki, 20 Honey hot, and 20 Lemon Pepper. Yeah, that’s a lot of wings. But I’m a professional.
The number one seller here is the traditional Buffalo wing. It has the nice butteriness, it has the spiciness, and it has some tang from the vinegar perfectly balanced. Awesome with some blue cheese.
Now buffalo wings were actually invented at a place called the Anchor Pub in Buffalo, New York. That’s why they’re called buffalo wings. I’ve actually gone there, it’s fun. It’s a cool place to visit. The wings are solid, but honestly, I think the wings may be better here at Buff’s than they are in Buffalo. And I’m being serious. Is there a football game on right now? Because all I want to do is eat this, drink a beer and watch football.
This is one of the newer flavors here. This is the spicy teriyaki. So this is more of an Asian style kind of chicken wing, a little darker in the color, the sauce is definitely a little bit thicker than a lot of them. When you bite into this baby, it’s much more complex than you would think. In the world of Asian style chicken wings, I would put the Kowloon in Saugus, their Saugus wings first, but I think the spicy teriyaki here at Buff’s might be a close second.
If there’s one sauce that has the biggest cult following it Buff’s it is definitely the honey hot. So basically starts with a traditional buffalo base and then they add in some of that sweet local honey. Listen, this is what great chefs do. They take something sweet, something spicy, something tangy. They balance it all out. They throw it on a wing and it just becomes pub grub perfection.
This is the most underrated sauce, the lemon pepper. Now I’ve had a lot of lemon pepper wings in my day, a lot of them are dry rub, these are completely different. First of all, it’s not even just lemon pepper. It’s technically lemon pepper garlic parmesan. That’s a lot of flavors going onto a wing. I’ll tell you right now, nothing smells better than this plate of wigs. Nothing, OMG that is sexy.
Interesting note about Buff’s: when it first opened in the 1970’s they named it after this the giant taxidermy buffalo head. that’s where the name Buff’s came from. At that time they didn’t even have Buffalo wings on the menu that didn’t come until 10 years later. But I guess it all worked out in the end because now it makes sense: Buff’s, buffs. Buff.
Now here’s the truth. You look through this place, every single table is ordering wings. But if you come to my table, I’m gonna have a whole lot of wings. Plus, I’m going to have an order of potato skins. You have those great hollowed out fried potatoes. They are stuffed and overstuffed with a blend of cheeses. Those get melted right in. Of course bacon bits go right on top and it’s served with some sour cream. And you know what I love about it. They even put some extra bacon bits right inside of the sour cream. Just like I dip my wings and blue cheese. I also like dipping my potato skin directly into the vat of sour cream.
If you’re in a place like this, of course they’re gonna have a burger and Buff’s has a really good burger. This is a nice hand packed fresh ground half pound burger. I liked the Texas Swiss barbecue burger has a nice layer of the Swiss cheese has some great barbecue sauce on it. And of course they throw in a couple of nice thick slices of bacon here too. And the best part honestly might be the onion rings that come on the side. Super crunchy on the outside, super tender and sweet on the inside of those onions.
At the end of the day, this is my kind of joint. Super casual, super affordable, super fun, always packed, always playing the right game. And chicken wings do not get any tastier than this place.
