Mad Matt’s
These are some seriously big, beautiful and flavorful roast beef sandwiches, and their pizza and pinwheels might be even better.
We are in Woburn, Massachusetts at the latest and greatest North Shore roast beef sensation: Mad Matt’s.
Mad Matt’s is part roast beef joint, part pizzeria, part sub shop and all insanely good and all made from scratch.
So who exactly is Mad Matt? It's owner operator, Matt Houvardas. He's barely 21 years old, but he is a protein prodigy.
Matt grew up in the restaurant business. His family operates Nick's Roast Beef in Burlington.
I grew up on the North Shore, so I've had a ton of roast beef sandwiches throughout my life. I have never seen a beef shop that looks like this. It is big, it is bright, it is colorful. It is fun.
They opened up shop in December of 2025, and ever since then, people have been flocking to this location for some of the best beef you can find in roast beef territory.
The most popular item on the menu by far is the traditional North Shore Three Way roast beef sandwich.
For those who don't know, a three way sandwich means the big three: mayo, American cheese and barbecue sauce, specifically James River barbecue sauce.
The roast beefs come in three traditional sizes: junior beef, your regular beef, and your super beef.
Now, here's what makes a Mad Matt's roast beef a little different. Every item on and in this sandwich is served warm.
The beef itself is sliced super thin, and then it comes out a big stack of rosy red roast beef that is nice and warm.
For the sauce, of course, it is James River barbecue sauce, and they keep that sauce warm too.
They even take their time to make sure they melt the cheese right on the grill first. So the cheese is nice, hot and gooey.
And the foundation for any great sandwich is the bun. No matter what style you get here, it is always toasted, hot and fresh.
You get a nice crunchy sensation with every bite.
Now this is the beef that has the North Shore buzzing. It is huge and it is insane.
This one's known as the Matty's Choice. This is the way Mad Matt makes it for himself.
Basically, this is a super beef that is taken to a whole new level. You have almost a pound of beef. You have your onion roll, the mayo, the sauce, the cheese.
And to take things to the next level, they throw on a couple slices of bacon and some hot honey.
So this thing is toasty and savory and sweet and smoky. So many flavors, so many textures.
There is zero chance to take a bite of this without making a mess of myself.
I honestly feel that something this obscenely delicious, it's almost profane. It's almost too much. Almost.
Obviously, roast beef sandwiches are the number one seller, but a close second and rising is a unique delicacy known as the pinwheel.
You can see from the circular shape and the way it's kind of swirled together, it's almost like a savory cinnamon bun.
You can either do buffalo chicken or some steak and cheese.
All you got to do is take your pinwheel, give it a little dip in some marinara sauce and go for it.
Now that is a lot of flavor in one bite. It's also a lot of calories in one bite, but who cares about that?
It's portable. It's affordable.
So here's the pro move: you get a roast beef sandwich and you get a pinwheel as the appetizer. That's a 1-2 punch you cannot beat.
Technically, the name of this place is Mad Matt's Pizza & Roast Beef. And the pizza should not be ignored.
I love this style of pizza. It's somewhere between a Greek style pizza and an Italian style pizza. So it's thin crust, but it's cooked in the pan.
My personal favorite is the Meat Lover's Pizza. It basically has the entire kitchen sink of proteins.
We're talking ham, sausage, pepperoni, hamburger, bacon, salami.
The crust is thin and yet sturdy. Very tasty and extremely meaty.
And after eating pounds of beef and tons of pizza, the only way to end your meal here is with a dessert calzone.
My personal favorite is the fluffernutter calzone. So you got pizza dough, marshmallow fluff, peanut butter, and a little cinnamon sugar and powdered sugar on top.
It's so wrong that it's right. Gooey, sticky, and ridiculously sweet. Now that's my kind of dessert.
I basically love everything about this restaurant. I even love the logo here.
I mean, look at the Mad Matt’s mascot. It's a swole, pepperoni, pizza faced man holding the world's biggest beef.
Now that is my spirit animal.
The only thing mad about Mad Matt’s are the portions and the prices.
If you come in here, you're definitely going to walk out with a smile. You will not be mad.
You will be extremely full when you visit Mad Matt’s in Woburn.
