Steak Tips.
Steak Sandwiches.
Steak and Cheese.
It ain’t exactly filet mignon, but some of Phantom’s favorite steak dishes are as affordable, as they are delicious.
Starting out with steak tips, nobody does it better than the Halfway Cafe. They’re marinated in a mouth-watering secret sauce and chargrilled to perfection. Best of all, a heaping platter costs under eleven bucks. Believe it or not, the deal is even better on Monday nights, when the price drops to only $7.99. If you prefer poultry, the Halfway also serves Phantom’s favorite Turkey Tips, and addictive hand-cut fries.
It’s easy to “be good” to your budget, and your tastebuds, at Boston’s b.good restaurant. Here, the steak is served with your waistline in mind.
Anthony Ackil - Co-owner, b.good: "What we're trying to do at b.good is take that food that tastes great, but also make it so that you can feel good about what you're eating and good about yourself for eating at b.good."
Everything on b.good’s menu is made healthy, including the Sliced Steak. For only eight dollars, the plate is packed with grilled spice-rubbed sirloin, Chimichurri sauce, spicy black beans and brown rice.
Moving on to monstrous steak and cheese subs… the belly-busters at Carl's in Waltham top out at $7.50. And the sirloin and swiss mix at Stadium in Southie costs about $10.
But there’s a psychedelic sandwich shop in Brighton that stole Phantom’s heart, and stomach! Moogy's is the humble home of a cheese steak named after the purple caped critic himself: The Phantom Royale with Cheese. And at just $4.50 for a six-inch sub, it’s a cheap and delicious way to eat like the Phantom.
Philip Matthew Shaffer – Owner, Moogy’s: “It’s a Steak and Cheese with barbecue, American cheese, and onion rings – like a heap of onion rings inside. Put them together and it’s really good. Everyone orders that, everybody.”
When it comes to Roast Beef Sandwiches, Bostonians get their fix at Kelly's Roast Beef. But the big thing in the small state of Rhode Island, is the Beef Barn.
Marc Branchaud - Owner, Beef Barn: "Our famous sandwich is a roast beef sandwich. We get 4 ounces of roast beef on a toasted bun for $2.75, and it's a great deal."
There’s also an outrageously affordable sirloin sandwich, a real steal of a meal at just $3.15. As a matter of fact this bona fide barn is so cheap, they only accept cash!
Next stop on the meat menu is Strip-T's, in Watertown. But don’t call the FCC, it’s not THAT kind of place. The only skin you’ll see here is on entrees like the Grilled Boneless Duck Breast. But steak is their signature, and their inspiration.
Paul Maslow – Chef/Owner: “We took the strip from the sirloin strip and tried to incorporate that in the name, and then I thought Strip-T’s, that’s kind of a nice play on words and nobody will ever forget the name.”
The prices at Strip T’s won’t strip your wallet. For just over seven dollars, their Tenderloin Tips Sandwich is packed with steak, grilled Portabella mushrooms, roasted red peppers, and melted American cheese.
For steak sandwiches with a Latin flair… there’s an even bigger bargain in Downtown Crossing, the “Chacarero.” At only six bucks, it’s no wonder why people line up by the hundreds for one of these super-cheap Chilean Sandwiches. It’s a creative combination of tender grilled steak, muenster cheese, sliced tomatoes, roasted red peppers, avocado spread, homemade hot sauce, and steamed green beans, all on freshly baked bread.
But for the ultimate carnivore craving, the Midwest Grill in Cambridge may be the biggest beef bargain in New England. This rodizio-style Brazilian restaurant is a meat lover’s dream. The all-you-can-eat buffet is supplemented by servers who circulate the tables with swords full of sirloin, lamb, sausage, pork and chicken hot off the grill. Lunch is a little less than twenty dollars, dinner is a little more. But it’s easy to eat your money’s worth here…
Or at any of Phantom’s favorite spots for steak on the cheap.
