Boston's South End is known for its variety of eclectic restaurants serving cuisine from around the globe. But one of the neighborhood's newest spots is offering all that variety, all under one roof. As its name would imply, "Equator" has quickly become a hot destination for diners wanting a world of options.
Sam Sriweawnetr - Chef/Owner, Equator: "I noticed they came and one had steak, one had Thai, and different country, some they like pasta... They love it. That's why I said, 'wow, this is good.' The people came in one place and they have a lot of choice."
Equator's overwhelming menu is full of Thai favorites from the owner's homeland, but dishes representing Asia, Europe, and America round out the bill of fare. Appetizers include Chicken Satay with Peanut and Cucumber Dipping Sauces, Soft Shell Crab Tempura with Creole Tartar Sauce, and giant Crab Cakes bursting with seasoned lump crabmeat.
Equator stretches across the globe with entrees like a sizzling Korean Beef Bulgoki. Crispy Tamarind Duck is served boneless on a bed of vegetables. Thailand's most famous dish, Pad Thai is packed with chicken and shrimp.
For those who aren't in the mood for Asian flavor, trade in your chopsticks for Cajun Chicken Pasta tossed in a rich Alfredo Sauce, or Filet Mignon Au Poivre with fresh veggies and a baked potato. The kitchen is able to prepare so many different types of cuisine so well thanks to Sam's lifetime of learning, traveling the world.
Sam Sriweawnetr - Chef/Owner, Equator: "When I was young, like twenty-something, I was all over Europe. I started from Asia, Middle East, and go to Holland, Amsterdam, French, German, and Japan, do all the cooking."
Sam’s traveling taste buds play a huge roll in Equator’s kitchen, as every dish is made to exact specifications, with a special commitment to healthy preparation.
Sam Sriweawnetr - Chef/Owner, Equator: “We don't need MSG, we don't need something. Just a sauce, a broth, vegetable. That's a good healthy food already. That's what I do in my restaurant here."
Entrees cost eleven to twenty-seven dollars, and appetizers are just seven to eleven. Just as eclectic as the menu is the 50-seat dining room, awash in wood tones and decorated with artifacts from around the world. And it's not uncommon to find tables filled with customers taking their own culinary world tour.
Sara Plabutong - Manager/Owner, Equator: "If they want to have great Thai food, this is the place. If they have a friend who doesn't want to have Thai food, they have another option."
Sam Sriweawnetr - Chef/Owner, Equator: "Customer first, that's what I train all my family. I say whatever the customer requests, we can make it. We can make from the kitchen, anything."
Any country, any dish, any time. Just head for the Equator, a Phantom Gourmet... Hidden Jewel
