Baking is taking ingredients and making something beautiful out of it. Every icing should be handmade. Every cake should be hand decorated. If you make things that you’re proud of, it’s easier to sell. Never put out a cake that you’re not proud to sell.

I think that people eat desserts to indulge themselves, like to treat themselves to something nice, or a special occasion that’s why you have a cake.

I’m Sara Wallace, welcome to Magnolia Bakery.

Magnolia Bakery started in New York City with an iconic American Bakery specializing in banana pudding, cupcakes, bars, brownies. We’re a small batch bakery, so we use eight quart mixers, so nothing is bigger than an eight quart. Everything is made fresh that day, every cake that we sell is made that day and everything is made from scratch. We use 100% real butter and that’s how baking should be.

We are the only Magnolia Bakery in Boston, we do bot get any of our products from New York, we make them all right here in our little bakery in Faneuil Hall.

Depending on what type of cupcake, they are different methods of mixing, so usually it’s the creaming method. So we get our butter and our sugar, we cream it together in our big mixer, until it’s light and fluffy and pale and then we slowly add the eggs in until they’re incorporated. We add our dry ingredients and then we put them in the cupcake pans and then we bake them in our convection ovens.

The bakery smells so good, the whole bakery is filled with the smell of the cupcakes, everybody in Faneuil Hall comes running. And then we decorate with our American buttercream, which is butter based and delicious. Buttercream is exactly what it sounds like, it is smooth butter. So we mix the butter in a mixer until it’s nice and soft. We add a little bit of milk and vanilla extract and powdered sugar.

We have a special way we top our cupcakes, we don’t pipe the frosting on, we dab it on by hand and then we do a swirl. The swirl is called our, “House Swirl,” it’s a really unique swirl, it’s very tricky to learn. It’s like rubbing your belly and patting your head at the same time. So you’re twisting the cupcake with your left hand and dabbing the icing on with your right hand in just the right way, that when you turn and swirl, it’s perfect.

Oh, I’m killing it today. Look at me go. These look good.

We have tons of different flavors. Today we are doing are s’mores cupcake, which is filled with ganache topped with meringue. It tastes exactly like you’re at a campfire and you’re eating a s’more. We grind up the graham crackers into the cake itself, like melty, soft chocolate on the inside is so good and then the meringue on the outside, it’s like a big marshmallow. You don’t have to sleep in a tent to eat that one, thank God.

Our Carrie cupcake, the classic vanilla with the vanilla buttercream and the daisy decos, so good. It is like vanilla, vanilla, vanilla, vanilla, it is fantastic. It’s an old fashioned butter cake, so it’s nice and buttery and rich, it’s the perfect cupcake.

We’re doing a peanut butter and jelly cupcake. Which is a peanut butter cake filled with grape jelly and then topped with a peanut butter meringue buttercream. It reminds me of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but even better.

In addition to cakes and cupcakes, we’re also known for our famous Banana Pudding. Banana Pudding is a vanilla pudding base that has whipped cream folded into it, so it’s soft and luscious. And then it’s layered with Nilla Wafer cookies and then we cut fresh bananas up in there too, so that all the flavors meld together.

In our Boston location we have an exclusive Boston Cream Pie Banana Pudding. So it’s our classic Banana Pudding, but there’s layers of chocolate fudge throughout it. It’s so good and it’s like the best little Boston treat, plus New York City Banana Pudding, Magnolia Bakery combined into one. When you take a bite of Banana Pudding, all your cares go away.

We want our customers to experience the whole Magnolia experience. It’s having that fresh just baked cupcake, fresh out of the oven. Hand iced by every person carefully, so that it looks beautiful. Put on display with pride.

I like to bake because I think it makes people happy. People come to Magnolia unhappy, but they definitely leave happy.
