One of the North End’s oldest pastry shops, Modern Pastry makes the best cannoli. Crispy tubes of deep fried pastry shell are filled at the last second (so they don’t go soggy), dipped in chocolate chips, and dusted with powdered sugar. Other Italian specialties include honey almond nougat called torrone, decadent wedding cakes, really rich ricotta pie, and marzipan bomba. Cookie monsters have a heck of a time choosing from delicate Florentines, chocolate biscotti, pignoli cookies, and raspberry filled bowties. The store isn’t equipped with much seating, which explains the spindles of box string dangling above the counter. There’s a 2nd location in Medford.
