It's the sweetest way to start the day. A visit to the Danish Pastry House in Medford. Yes, they have Danish. But that's just the beginning. Because every pastry they make here is jaw-droppingly delicious, thanks to plenty of sugar, butter, and love.

Kathleen Flahive - Danish Pastry House: "It's the love, honestly I know it's cheesy, but it's the love that we put into it."

Kathleen Flahive opened the Danish Pastry House about three years ago, with her friend Ulla Winkler, a native of Denmark, who found herself constantly craving the pastries she grew up with.

Inside their bakery-cafe, you'll crave waking up to Crepes stuffed with strawberry, banana, and Nutella, fresh Fruit Cups topped with lemon whipped cream, or homemade Pop Tarts that put the supermarket version to shame.

Kathleen Flahive - Danish Pastry House: "It's kind of like having that Pop Tart of your dreams, because it's got that fabulous raspberry, it's got your icing, it's got the sprinkles to make it kind of fun and different."

Every day of the week, the Danish Pastry House makes great pastries for breakfast, and awesome sandwiches for lunch, but when brunch rolls around, they add in all the classics too.

Kathleen Flahive - Danish Pastry House: "Eggs, bacon, sausage, French toast. We make sure that the bacon is really crispy, the French toast has the right amount of cinnamon, so you have all of those different things that create this amazing meal."

When you visit a place named the Danish Pastry House, you'd be foolish not to sample some of their authentic Danish pastries. Especially the Kringle, the king of Danish pastries. For just about everyone, it's love at first bite.

Kathleen Flahive - Danish Pastry House: "Everybody tries it, they just love it and they say 'what is that amazing creation?' And I say 'that is the Kringle, that is what we're all about.'"

This pastry packs a punch. The dough is beaten together with butter, stretched nice and thin, then rolled out more than fifty feet, creating the flakiest dough you'll ever find. Then, they pipe on a layer of mysterious goodness that will blow you away.

Kathleen Flahive - Danish Pastry House: "Some people think it's apple, some people think it's cheese, but it's almond paste. And it's a little bit sweet, has that somehow a little bit savoriness to it... and you're like 'oh my gosh, this is totally different and this is amazing.'"

So drop the danish, and taste the Kringle, at the Danish Pastry House, a Phantom Gourmet... Hidden Jewel.
