GOURMET GREATNESS

This funky American-Asian fusion bistro is more fun than a barrel of its namesake.

Atmosphere: 9
Green Monkey in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is a quirky New American eatery with a friendly vibe. The dining room is decked out in exotic artwork, funky chandeliers, and monkey stencils on the white tablecloths.
Menu: 8
The menu is an appealing mix of local ingredients, with provocative Asian fusion touches thrown in
Appetizers: 9
To start, crispy Pork Wontons were chock full of the good stuff, packed with crunchy green apple and served with a sweet-spicy dipping sauce. Phantom went bananas for the excellent Lemongrass Steamed Mussels, sauteed in coconut milk and green curry broth.
Entrees: 8
Next, Herb-Crusted Mahi-Mahi was terrific, served with decadent lobster mashed potatoes and a bracing mango-lime salsa. A perfectly cooked Black Angus Ribeye, slathered with herb butter and smoked salt, was marred by potato croquette with an ice-cold center.
Dessert: 8
There was no monkeying around come dessert time. Fried-to-order beignets were doused with a tasty berry coulis, and the housemade Green Monkey Ice Cream was a delicious confection of cinnamon and luscious cream.
Portions: 8
Appetizers are big enough to share, and some of the entrees—like the delicious Grilled Marinated Lamb—are massive enough to feed a hungry ape.
Service: 8
Service went off without a hitch, and the bartenders and waiters were quick with menu suggestions.
Cleanliness: 9
This Monkey’s habitat was spick and span, from the polished-granite bar to the red-and-gold-hued dining room.
Value: 8
Entrees in the high $20s get expensive, but Phantom doesn’t mind splurging for food this good.
Location: 9
Green Monkey is on Pleasant Street, on a quiet block in Portsmouth, steps away from the quaint historic district.
