Peanut Butter and Jelly… The Reuben… The Monte Cristo…

Nothing says comfort food like a good old-fashioned sandwich. And if Phantom assembled a sandwich hall of fame, it would look at lot like the menu at the All Star Sandwich Bar.

This hot new spot in Inman Square, Cambridge, is a sandwich lover’s dream, where these All-American classics are prepared just the way you remember.

Chris Schlesinger – Co-Owner, All Star Sandwich Bar: “A lot of people when they do sandwiches theses days kind of make up new sandwiches… But we thought that there were so many classic sandwiches that had been done over time… That we wanted to try to do those and pay homage and tribute to the greatness of those sandwiches.”

All the classics are on the menu. The Reuben is piled high with Corned Beef, Swiss, and Sauerkraut. The Gobbler serves up a stack of Thanksgiving, with roast turkey, apple sausage stuffing, and orange-cranberry relish. And the Monte Cristo is a true double threat, half breakfast, half lunch, with ham, turkey and melted Swiss grilled between thick French toast.

Chris Schlesinger – Co-Owner, All Star Sandwich Bar: “I remember when I went to culinary school and they always said the Monte Cristo had recently won the Sandwich Olympics or something like that you know.”

Every championship caliber sandwich is represented, and every bite is like a mouthful of memories.

Chris Schlesinger – Co-Owner, All Star Sandwich Bar: “I think we have a longstanding relationship with sandwiches, ever since we were little kids. I mean what sandwich did you carry in your lunchbox everyday.”

Chances are the answer to that question is the classic P-B-and-J. And All Star serves it up with smooth or chunky peanut butter, for only $2.75.

There are plenty of regional sandwich specialties too. Hailing from Buffalo, New York, is the Beef on Weck, warm roast beef served on a crusty, salty, Kimmelwick bun, with horseradish for spreading and au jus for dipping.

Chris Schlesinger – Co-Owner, All Star Sandwich Bar: “It sounds like your basic hot roast beef sandwich, but if you know anybody from Buffalo, New York, they’ll certainly tell you different.”

Checking in from New Orleans is the Big Easy Greazy Muffaletta.

Chris Schlesinger – Co-Owner, All Star Sandwich Bar: “When you’re eating this, if it doesn’t stain your shirt, it’s not made properly.”

And there’s the ultimate Southern Sandwich, a big ol’ pile of North Carolina Barbecue Pork. This vinegar based barbecue serves up some spice, but there’s one dish at All Star that really brings the heat: The State Pen Chili.

Chris Schlesinger – Co-Owner, All Star Sandwich Bar: “It’s nasty chili, not in a bad way, but in a good way. It’s a chili that’s served in Folsom Prison, it’s served to inmates so it’s got to be tough, strong, and have a lot of character.”

Still Hungry? There are three kinds of fresh cut fries, and four kinds of hot dogs. But wait a minute… is a hot dog really a sandwich?

Chris Schlesinger – Co-Owner, All Star Sandwich Bar: “We define a sandwich essentially as some stuff between two or more slices of bread. So using that definition, a hot dog is technically not a sandwich, but we figured a hot dog is a very close friend of a sandwich.”

If the hot dog is a sandwich’s close friend, the Wrap is its mortal enemy.

Jim Economides - Co-Owner, All Star Sandwich Bar: “We just feel that wraps aren’t really a true sandwich. That wraps are a pseudo-sandwich.”

Chris Schlesinger – Co-Owner, All Star Sandwich Bar: “If people like wraps that’s fine, but to me a wrap is a poor imitation of a sandwich.”

That’s right, no imitators allowed. Because when it comes to sandwiches, no one can beat this all-star team… The All Star Sandwich Bar, a Phantom Gourmet… Hidden Jewel.
