With a psychedelic sign, welcoming workers, and an incredibly extensive and inventive menu, Moogy's Breakfast and Sandwich Shop in Brighton is a true original.
Philip Matthew Shaffer – Owner, Moogy’s: “Moogy’s is the kind of place that’s made for the bold and adventurous. The kind of person that’s used to corporation food, that knows exactly what they’re getting, might not like it here. But the person who’s ready for something different, something new – the more adventurous type person will come into Moogy’s to experience something different.”
And for most customers, the true Moogy’s experience is all about the Steak and Cheese Sub.
Philip Matthew Shaffer – Owner, Moogy’s: “We’ve mastered the Steak and Cheese and the Chicken Steak and we’ve gone beyond what Philadelphia would say was a good Steak and Cheese. Everyone says Philadelphia Cheese Steak, but this is a Boston Cheese Steak, and it’s actually better.”
Moogy’s make’s it better with a blend of two types of steak, and while you can always order the standard Cheese Steak, the sandwich shout-outs don’t stop there. Try the Phat Philly, topped with delicious grilled onions, or one of Moogy’s dozen Chicken Steaks. The Jolly Green Giant mixes broccoli with swiss and honey mustard. The Bluto is packed with pizza sauce, spinach and mozzarella cheese. For kids, or kids at heart, the Slamba Jamba is a triple-decker peanut butter, fluff, and banana sandwich; and when it’s served on warm toasted bread, this tempting treat becomes and oogy-gooey, messy masterpiece.
But Phantom’s favorite sandwich is a Cheese Steak named after the purple caped critic himself: The Phantom Royale with Cheese.
Philip Matthew Shaffer – Owner, Moogy’s: “The people that do the show come in… and they decided that a sub would be nice… and we said, ‘you make a sub up and basically, we’ll put it on the wall.’ And they came up with something that everyone loves; it’s a Steak and Cheese with barbecue, American cheese, and onion rings – like a heap of onion rings inside. Put them together and it’s really good.”
Of course subs aren’t the only sustenance served up at Moogy’s. Breakfast options include pancakes packed with banana, chocolate chip, and blueberry. The Love Child is a French toast sandwich with ham, turkey and swiss, served with syrup for dipping. But if you really want to or pig out, order the Dizzy Pig: three scrambled eggs, with ham, bacon, sausage, and toast.
The forty seat restaurant is a favorite for anyone looking to kick back and relax. Local college students love Moogy’s for the board games, beer, and ridiculously reasonable prices. A small six inch sub sells for just four bucks, and a large thirteen inch beast is about seven.
Philip Matthew Shaffer – Owner, Moogy’s: “You can’t find a place that’s a good neighborhood little joint to hang and have a beer and talk with your friends, and that little atmosphere. Everything now is this big corporate – you know – whatever it is they’re going for. This is about the only place I can think of that has this type of environment.”
Friends, food, and fun. It’s all connected at Moogy’s, a Phantom Gourmet… Hidden Jewel.
