South Boston is not exactly known for its Mexican cuisine. But a little restaurant named "Salsa's" is trying to change that. Owner David Littlefield has never even been South of the Border:
"Everybody's looking at me like, 'Irish... Mexican... where's all this coming from?'
But you'd never know it from tasting the food.
"It's become very authentic. My head chef is from Mexico.. she's from Cocabaca. She's unbelievable."
And it's easy to figure out how this restaurant took its name.
"The salsa itself is completely authentic and fresh every day. It's hand cut every day with the special spices, a little cilantro, and we heard on the street that we weren't hot enough. So we just really spiced it up, and now we have people asking, 'do you have something not so hot?'"
Aside from the chunky red salsa, some of the more popular dishes included enchiladas, tacos, burritos, the Papa Taco (potato baked with cheese and either chicken or steak), and of course, some of the biggest and most flavorful fajitas around.
"They come out piping hot on a sizzling platter with red and green peppers with marinated steak or chicken and we have a combo fajita we can do."
Prices range from the affordable to the ludicrously cheap, with appetizers running about four dollars and most entrees falling under six bucks.
"I wanted to price things moderately as you can see. I want people to come in here, they might not know the dish, they might. Whatever the case, they'll try it for $5-6 and under."
When Dave isn't helping out in the kitchen or working the register at Salsa's, you can find him and his signature Fire Shoes moonlighting as his famous alter-ego: "The Sausage Guy" late night on Landsdowne Street in Boston.
And how does the clientele at Salsa's and his sausage cart differ?
"Here they can pronounce what they're ordering!"
Here at Salsa's, the crowds will have to wait to drink a Corona or margarita with their dinner. There's no liquor license yet.
"We're keeping our fingers crossed. It'll just spice the place up a little more. Not too much, but a little bit."
