East Coast Grill & Raw Bar (The Greatest: Bloody Mary Bar)
1271 Cambridge St. Cambridge, MA 02139 (617) 491-6568 www.eastcoastgrill.net
East Coast Grill & Raw Bar is a famously fun restaurant with a wacky Sunday brunch that claims the world’s largest Bloody Mary bar. It’s a make-your-own smorgasbord including 3 tomato bases; a half dozen spices from curry to paprika; a dozen hot sauces; skewered fruit and olives; and sauces like mango-habanero. Chef/owner Chris Schlesinger puts out a bold Latin-inspired brunch that includes their signature barbequed seafood. Steak & eggs comes with pickled peppers and fried sweet potatoes, and there’s an awesome omelet with avocado, black beans, cheese, and guava. Phantom always tacks on an order of Monterey jack grits with pineapple, bacon, and plantains.
Harvard Gardens (The Greatest: Saturday Brunch)
316 Cambridge Street Boston, MA 02114 (617) 523-2727 www.harvardgardens.com
Harvard Gardens serves Phantom’s favorite Sunday AND Saturday brunch until 3 pm, specializing in modern comfort food. The same stylish crew crowding the handsome bar the night before pops back in for applewood smoked bacon, chocolate and banana stuffed French toast, and HG Eggs Benny stacked with smoked salmon. Most plates include a croissant, and you can add on an order of crispy “Damn Good Home Fries” infused with Parmesan and sautéed onions. The space oozes class, from the hardwood floors to the sleek banquettes.
Red Rock Bistro (The Greatest: Jazz Brunch)
141 Humphrey St. Swampscott, MA 01907 (781) 595-1414 www.redrockbistro.com
If you’re brunching on the North Shore, it had better be at Red Rock Bistro. Live jazz sets the mood, and diners get a clear shot of the Boston skyline across the bay. Creative American classics include Belgian waffles with Vermont maple syrup. Steak & eggs are smothered in hollandaise, and fried eggs are served over sweet potato and chorizo hash. Brunch is half lunch, so you also score Red Rock’s signature: fried clams piled into a brown paper bag with tartar on the side. Their other paper bag creation is fresh fried doughnuts plated with mango yogurt for dipping.
Metropolis Cafe (The Greatest: Huevos Rancheros)
584 Tremont St. Boston, MA 02118 (617) 247-2931 www.metropolisboston.com
Metropolis Café is a tiny tin of a neighborhood restaurant with one of the city’s best brunches. Served on Saturday and Sunday, the memorable meal includes grapefruit mimosas, Boursin and chive omelets, and apple chicken sausage. The banana pancakes are spectacular; the creamy grits come with chorizo and fried eggs; and the huevos rancheros are balanced over cumin black bean hash. Customers squeeze into the tightly spaced tables and read the paper at the wrap-around bar.
Foxwoods Sunday Champagne Brunch (The Greatest: Champagne Brunch)
Foxwoods Resort & Casino 39 Norwich Westerly Rd. Ledyard, CT 06339 (800) 369-9663 www.foxwoods.com
When Phantom heads to “The Woods” for the weekend, the only sure bet is the Sunday Champagne Brunch in the Sunset Ballroom. Ice sculptures and chocolate fountains are highlights, but it’s the sprawling buffet that keeps the Caped Critic coming back for more…and more…and more.. It’s so expansive, you almost need a golf cart to get around. As the name implies, there’s champagne toast included, along with coffee and endless juice. The insane brunch spread will have you juggling pastries, a sushi station, carved meats, seafood like oysters and shrimp cocktail, pasta, made to order omelets and crepes, and desserts.
Tremont 647 (The Greatest: Pajama Brunch)
647 Tremont St. Boston, MA 02118 (888) 895-2515 www.tremont647.com
Tremont 647 is known for its unusually delicious food, but every Saturday and Sunday the stylish space transforms into a fun pajama brunch. Customers and servers roll out of bed and sport their sleepwear right into the dining room. The daring menu dishes out chocolate chip pancakes, breakfast pizza, and Andy’s signature MoMos (pork-ginger dumplings.) There’s croissant French toast and lobster and grits with poached eggs. Some waitresses have been known to get a little risqué with their bedtime attire, and there have been reports of a certain large someone in purple silk PJs.
Henrietta's Table (The Greatest: Gourmet Buffet)
The Charles Hotel 1 Bennett St. Cambridge, MA 02138 (617) 661-5005 www.charleshotel.com
Henrietta’s Table is an upscale country kitchen with a spectacular Sunday brunch at a spectacularly expensive price. From noon to 3 pm, it’s an all-you-can-eat feast of fresh shucked Wellfleet oysters, bacon, sausage, and smoked fish. They have three hot entrees, an omelette station, and crispy waffles. Fresh squeezed orange juice flows like water, and you don’t have to finish your farm fresh eggs before hitting the 10-dessert smorgasbord. The rustic dining room is so homey, you can dress up or just throw on a pair of jeans.
Neighborhood Restaurant (The Greatest: Breakfast Bargain)
25 Bow St. Somerville, MA 02143 (617) 628-2151 www.theneighborhoodrestaurant.com
Neighborhood Restaurant & Bakery is one of the best bargain brunches around. Every heaping plate comes with unlimited coffee or tea, a small orange juice, homefries, homemade pastries, and a choice of fresh fruit or hot cereal. The menu is homestyle American with a Portuguese twist that often includes linguica sausage. They have cheesy omelets, tropical papaya pancakes, and sweet French toast served with three eggs any style. Fun colors brighten the walls, and the driveway is converted into outdoor seating with a vine covered trellis overhead.
